Bulwell’s green spaces can be a joy, but we all know they present their own problems.
Grass needs cutting, weeds need spraying, trees and bushes need trimming….and it’s a struggle to keep up, especially post Covid. Add to this a horrible new habit of leaving bags of household waste by public bins, and the continuing problem of fly-tipping.
Enter Darren Tattersall (local street scene manager) and team, well known among our residents for their hard work and Darren’s problem solving skills. They can’t work miracles, but they’re the ones who keep our heads above water. Fly-tipping gets whisked away, unruly hedges get a hair-cut, and old materials are recycled in new roles.
The Bulwell councillors are currently pushing to provide Darren’s team with additional, and very necessary, equipment.

Thank you to everyone who came along on Sunday 5th June - what an event it proved to be.
It was a Family fun filled day with something for everyone, 150 people attended. Great food was provided by Maria Shakespeare and there was a bouncy castle and games for children and lots of other activities for all ages.
We had entertainment from Johnny performing his Afrobeats dancing and people were able to try out African drumming thanks to Andy Harris.
Many thanks to Maria Shakespeare, Helen Robertson and the women from the Thursday lunch group who organised this very memorable event, which brought the community together.

Snape Wood Nature Reserve has had fly-tipping issues in the past, and so in April 2020, during lockdown, our Bulwell Street Scene team cleared 68 tonnes of flytipping from this woodland.
What a difference couple of years can make - thanks to our brilliant Clean Champions, and monthly litter picks we have removed many more tonnes of flytipping including a burnt out motorbike.
We even met one Sunday, to clear glass from the footpaths prior to a week of activities, run for local children in the woods. This woodland can now be enjoyed safely by the local community - please remember to always take your litter away with you.

The River Leen is an asset for Bulwell, offering a lovely walk beside the water down to Basford, somewhere to sit and watch the world go by on Bulwell Bogs and somewhere for children to play in the summer by the splash park.
It is also a thriving natural habitat for wildlife, home to various kinds of fish, birds and insects. Sadly, some choose to treat this wonderful asset like a dump, throwing they’re waste in there like tyres, drink cans, glass bottles and other such rubbish. This isn’t fair on the people who want to enjoy the natural beauty of the Leen, or the wildlife that live in it.
Once a month, I put on my waders and marigolds and join local volunteers to roll our sleeves up and wade into the water to remove as much of this rubbish as we can. The Environment Agency are responsible to keeping the river clean, but it’s a massive job. But when we all do our bit, it makes all the difference.
If you’d like to join us, we meet every 3rd Saturday of the month at the Bulwell tram stop car park at 10:30am. Come along and we’ll see you there!
Councillor Ethan Radford
