Good News in New Jersey

The Philadelphia Inquirer ran a great story on our lead volunteer, Founder, and Executive Director, Uyen (Winn) Khuong and the work she's been doing with ATNJ!  If you do not have a subscription, you can also read it here.
We do good work. Help us continue into 2020 and please donate!

We would like to thank all of our small donors who made a BIG difference on #GivingTuesday. We rely 💯 on donations from you and we appreciate your support to keep us going.

Did you know that we recently got 501c3 charity designation by the IRS based on our voter education work?  This is very tough to get (and took us 10 months) since the IRS doesn't allow for groups to skip paying taxes unless they can prove they are doing legitimate charitable work!  As you all know, we are a 100% volunteer group and #GivingTuesday is the largest fundraising of the year.

We would like to thank the supporters who did #GivingTuesday fundraisers benefiting ATNJ Education Fund. The number one challenge of any nonprofit, is fundraising. When you are a 100% volunteer organization like we are, raising enough for the first hires is our first big hurdle that we are working on.  WHY are donations needed?  This work is complex and takes more time and dedication than what volunteers can give:  we need dedicated time from paid, full-time staff.  So, a big #ThankYouWednesday from the team of dedicated volunteers at ATNJ Education Fund!

Dan Janowski, volunteer CIO, researching and crafting amendments to fix the VBM law.  This will help over half a million VBM voters in New Jersey.

Take Action!

  • One of the big issues this season is Driver's Licenses for All. Whether you care about immigrants or not (we hope you do!) the Star Ledger Editorial Board has a good article out on why this issue is important for public safety. And the Rev. Dr. Charles F. Boyer wrote an article about how immigrants rights are part of racial justice.

Check our Events section of this newsletter to find a number of rallies and vigils that you can take part in across the state (including one virtual social media event) to help push for Driver's Licenses for All.

And from the comfort of your own home, find out how your legislators are leaning on this issue and call to support them, or encourage them to do the right thing. The New Jersey Assembly Judiciary Committee is voting on this *today* and then the Senate to follow on the 12th, with the full vote being on the 16th, so please call soon!

  • While there isn't a date yet, we know the Senate will soon be voting on restoring voting rights for people on parole and probation. The Assembly already passed this, now the Senate needs to hear from us. Easily email your legislators with this form by the NJ Institute for Social Justice.

  • This is the *last week* for open enrollment of health care! GetCovered.NJ.gov is the website to go to to find all of your healthcare options in NJ - including many options for those who need help financially. Please visit now if you need coverage. The open enrollment period ends on December 15.
