Humor’s always been a huge part of my life, John. From helping me cope with bullies in elementary school to literally paying my bills in my twenties, comedy's always been there.
But a funny thing happened when I started running for Congress. People told me I should try to “downplay” my comedy background because it wasn’t “professional.”
Well, I’m not hiding anything! Comedy is a huge part of who I am AND it impacts this campaign on a daily basis!
I’m about to tell you more but first, can you chip in $5 to help this former comedian (me!) flip Florida’s 15th District?
Now, you might be thinking…what does comedy have to do with running for office?
A lot! Because I think that — underneath it all — comedy is about recognizing the absurdity of life. And what’s more absurd than Congress?
More than 50% of our legislators are millionaires. Far-right Republicans talk about protecting freedom as they attack democracy. We’re the wealthiest nation in the history of the world, yet millions can’t access vital healthcare. We’re a nation of immigrants, but racist politicians use anti-immigration rhetoric to divide us! If that’s not absurd — I don’t know what is!
That’s where the comedy comes in, John! Humor can help lower our defenses, spotlight injustices, and force us to think about things in different ways. As we try to solve incredibly complex problems — like our broken healthcare system — we need to use as many creative tools as possible.
Comedy may not solve all our problems — but it CAN help bring us closer together.
I’m proud of my comedy background and now it will serve me well in DC. John, can you help us send this former comedian to Congress by chipping in $5 to my campaign?
