What took place on January 6, 2021, was a violent assault on our democracy – but it wasn’t the first attack. It was the physical manifestation of the most extreme elements of the Republican party, bubbling over the surface.

Republicans have been working for years to chip away at our democracy through discriminatory voter ID laws, gerrymandering, and other policies designed to suppress the vote of marginalized communities. January 6 was a culmination of anti-democratic policies and weaponized misinformation.

January 6, 2021, was a symptom of a nation in distress. The Select Committee investigating the attack has uncovered even more evidence that Trump and his allies were attempting to overturn the outcome of a free and fair election and overthrow our government on American soil.

While many people have been criminally charged, work still needs to be done to ensure this type of violent attack can never happen again.

Since the Capitol attacks, the GOP has only ramped up its efforts to thwart the democratic process with more false claims of election fraud in preparation to deny the will of the American electorate. We must take action to defend our democracy NOW.
