General Meeting This Thursday
|
Houston DSA’s monthly general meetings are where the membership comes together to be in community, discuss the activities going on within our own chapter and the national DSA, and conduct chapter business like elections, votes, or resolutions.
General meetings are open to non-members, though participation in certain activities like elections and votes is reserved for Houston DSA members only (click here to become a member)!
We work to make our meetings as accessible as possible to everyone. To help parents participate, we offer child watch through our Socialist Sprouts program. If you need someone to watch your potty-trained and vaccinated child, let us know!
To get to the meeting via Houston METRO: Rt. 40 – Telephone Rd. @ Oakliff St. (Stop #1656, 1652) Rt. 28 – S. Wayside Dr. @ Telephone Rd. (Stop #3541, 1651)
Email [email protected] for carpool information or if you have any other needs we can work to accommodate.

Our racial justice working group is sending a group of people to Brownsville to help out Team Brownsville's migrant justice efforts. We will talk more about this during the general, but if you would like to help the group we are sending, come out to the Racial Justice working group meeting Sunday, December 15 from 3-5pm at Bohemeo's. Migrant justice is an incredibly important issue, so I encourage everyone to come out and support this work however they can.

Next Reading Group we will be covering Mark Fisher's short book "Capitalist Realism". After 1989, capitalism has successfully presented itself as the only realistic political-economic system---a situation that the bank crisis of 2008, far from ending, actually compounded. The book analyses the development and principal features of this capitalist realism as a lived ideological framework. Using examples from politics, films, fiction, work and education, it argues that capitalist realism colors all areas of contemporary experience. But it will also show that, because of a number of inconsistencies and glitches internal to the capitalist reality program capitalism in fact is anything but realistic.
If you are interested in obtaining an epub version of this book for non-distributional purposes to read for the discussion, please email us at [email protected]. Of course, the book is also available for purchase online from various sources.
The Houston DSA Reading Group is open to members and non-members alike and aims to be accessible to all attendees regardless of background knowledge or expertise. We hope to see you there!

On Sunday we had a great Houston DSA Watercooler, which is what I'm calling when we hang out on Sunday's at Bohemeo's and get some work done together. It's pretty casual, so you should come on by whenever you want to! We generally show up to Bohemeo's at 3 pm on Sundays. Hope to see you there!
Our Houston DSA for Bernie campaign met on Monday to discuss the campaign and our broader strategy around endorsed candidates. We're fully in the swing of things so keep an eye out on e-mail and mattermost for upcoming actions.
