Health Affairs

Dear John,

Tomorrow we're hosting our next virtual Journal Club event
at
4:00 p.m. ET. Authors Morgan Henderson and Morgane Mouslim will discuss
their new study examining how emergency department facility fees for
self-pay patients vary according to hospital and regional
characteristics.

Diabetes Quality Measures

Since the mid-1990s, the U.S. has introduced a large number of diabetes
quality measures. While the growth of quality measures has increased the
burden of measurement, there has not been an associated improvement in
the quality of care or well-being for patients.

In order to improve the quality of diabetes care, David Jiang and
coauthors reimagine the quality measurement framework

in this month's Health Affairs.

Jiang and coauthors recommend the adoption and modernization of quality
measures along the domains of effectiveness, efficiency and value,
safety, timeliness, patient-centeredness, and equity.

Additionally, Jiang and coauthors suggest the optional use of the
remaining new and modernized measures for evaluative purposes to
identify and address gaps in care quality and outcomes.

Jiang and coauthors look to federal agencies for "redesigning diabetes
care quality measurement and reporting [to] support practices and
policies at all levels of the health care system to improve the health
of people with diabetes."
