My name is Kellie Ryan. I work at the IRC, and recently got back from a trip to Afghanistan. I'm reaching out because we need your immediate help.

Afghan children are in crisis.

The hunger emergency I witnessed on my recent trip to Afghanistan is shocking. Since the shift in power last year, food insecurity has skyrocketed. 3.5 million children are in need of treatment for malnutrition.

I also wanted to tell you about Nazo, one of our community health volunteers who I met on my last visit to Afghanistan. (She's pictured above.)

While in Afghanistan, Nazo and my colleagues told me that almost all the patients they are seeing are malnourished children being rushed to clinics by their mothers, frantic with worry.

Nazo took me with her as she went out into the community. I'll never forget what I saw. Mothers were crying as they protectively held tiny, hungry babies. I watched as Nazo cared for them.

This is why I have hope, Friend.

I'm incredibly proud of the dedicated IRC staff and volunteers — like Nazo — that I met in Afghanistan. They ensure families in crisis are able to survive, recover and regain control of their lives.

I spoke with Nazo more and she told me about her work. She said, “The situation in our country is very bad. There are no supplies. We lack everything.”

Despite this, she's able to make a real difference. She works with families to help them prevent diseases and care for their children when they are sick.
