The modern filibuster doesn’t even require a talk-til-you-drop marathon session on the floor of the Senate.
Now all that is required is one person to object (behind closed doors), and if the bill can’t clear a simple majority of 60 senators, it is blocked from consideration.
Abortion rights, voting rights, and many other pieces of legislation widely supported by Americans are being blocked by a minority in the Senate.
Bills to codify Roe v. Wade, restore the promise of the Voting Rights Act, and to end corporate personhood have been blocked in the Senate with a filibuster.
Abolishing the filibuster would mean we could move forward on restoring civil rights and preserving our democracy.
The Framers of the Constitution went to great lengths to prevent a minority of senators from thwarting the democratic process. The filibuster is not in the Constitution.
