Democratic overwhelmingly support strong reforms to the federal judiciary.

Folks – I’ve written a lot about SCOTUS in the last few months, and with good reason.

The United States Supreme Court has become a rogue agency, and every single option needs to be on the table to correct the course of this now thoroughly illegitimate institution. If you agree it’s time to reform the court, add your name below.

The right-wing supermajority in SCOTUS has handed down a flood of decisions with disastrous implications for our democracy. Here’s a quick recap from just the last few weeks:

  • Shinn v. Ramirez stopped incarcerated people from proving their innocence after a known wrongful conviction

  • New York State Rifle & Pistol Association Inc. v. Bruen dismantled states’ ability to write and enforce effective gun safety laws

  • Dobbs v. Jackson Women's Health Organization overturned abortion rights, and with it our constitutional right to bodily autonomy and privacy

  • Two cases, Carson v Makin and Kennedy v. Bremerton School District, have effectively eliminated the separation of church and state

Every one of these decisions was a 6:3 majority. And this radical court is NOT done. Next session they plan to hear cases that will fundamentally cripple our ability to carry out free and fair elections.

We’re supposed to have a system of checks and balances, but this court is being allowed to run amok. Add your name and tell Congress to reform the Supreme Court NOW.

There are a number of steps the House and Senate could take right now to restore public trust in the judicial branch. Here are just a few:

  • Expand the court to neutralize the right-wing supermajority built on a seat stolen by Mitch McConnell

  • Impeach justices who lied under oath during their confirmation hearings and engage in unethical conduct (such as Justice Thomas refusing to recuse himself from a case involving his own wife)

  • Impose term limits for federal judicial appointments

  • Establish ethical standards for judicial appointees

These proposals are not new. The Supreme Court has been expanded many times in the past, and constitutional scholars agree it’s time to do it again.

A screenshot of a headline from the Harvard Law and Policy Review Journal from May 6, 2019, which reads: “The Supreme Court Has Been Expanded Many Times Before. Here Are Four Ways To Do It Today.”

Congress can no longer ignore the court’s deepening legitimacy crisis. I refuse to stand by while a radical, right-wing judiciary continues to dismantle our rights and pervert our democracy.

As the next representative for WA-02, I will fight for these reforms when I get to Congress – but we can’t afford to wait. Join me, and tell Congress to act TODAY.

Solidarity,

Jason Call

P.S. I’m the only candidate in this race who supports the common sense court reforms described here. We are on track to win this primary and could really use your help to boost our efforts. Can you pitch in $22 (our average donation) to support our grassroots campaign today?
