Sri Lanka has been in the news recently. Economic meltdown, food and fuel shortages have caused mass protests over the country. But behind the food and fuel shortages causing Sri Lanka’s protests lie unmanageable debts owed to the global North.
Sri Lanka is the first country to default during this period of spiralling food and fuel prices. What is needed now is debt cancellation, to ensure the Sri Lankan people can feed themselves, and hospitals can access essential medicines.
