Social Security is one of the most popular programs in American history. Created by President Franklin D. Roosevelt nearly 90 years ago to combat poverty during the Great Depression, Social Security is proof that the government is able to implement successful, enduring programs that improve people’s lives.
Yet Republicans, who are dangerously out of step with everyday Americans, are looking to eviscerate Social Security.
If profit-driven politicians such as Rick Scott, Lindsey Graham, and Mitch McConnell get their way, Social Security as we know it could disappear in just five years. The only ones who wouldn’t be affected by this catastrophe are ultra-millionaires and billionaires.
Our senior citizens deserve better. Right now, scores of hardworking folks are losing sleep over their ability to retire. We must do everything in our power to not only protect Social Security, but expand it, because our seniors have earned the dignity of a secure retirement.
