Weekly Training Digest - Advance Your Skills With Training And Resources

Ever thought about writing a book? Journalists have natural curiosity, an expertise that adds context to narrative, an established writing discipline and a connection to local communities. And let’s be honest: A lot of journalists also want or need more money. It makes sense to add “author” to your portfolio.

Poynter’s Amaris Castillo spoke with “nearly a half dozen journalists who are authors or have forthcoming books, and a few of the publishing professionals tied to their deals” in this fascinating article. She shares what she found out about the pathways into publishing — and what publishers want from journalists.

If you’re working on a manuscript or simply learning how to better articulate your unique perspective, apply for our Writing Workshop for Journalists of Color. I also recommend that you check out Poynter senior scholar Roy Peter Clark’s reflection on what he learned about good writing from Francis X. Clines.

Oh, and my favorite book by a journalist? It has to be “Dispatches from the Edge: A Memoir of War, Disasters, and Survival” by Anderson Cooper! What's your favorite?
