Catching up is a challenge for many students. For those who fell extraordinarily behind during the pandemic, it is even harder. These learners need supplies to stay organized and connections to caring adults and peers to be successful.

Our goal is to fill 600-700 backpacks with supplies and personal notes of encouragement for students enrolled in elementary, middle and high school or in GED and workforce training programs.

Will you help us fill their backpacks with supplies needed to start on equal footing? You can purchase items from our Amazon Wishlist ([link removed]) . (Please include your name on an Amazon gift note so we can thank you). Or you can help by donating directly to the ([link removed]) Back-to-School Supply Drive ([link removed]) on our website.

Identity youth are among the poorest in Montgomery County and the hardest hit by the pandemic. They live with an average of 5 family members. For 90%, the average household income is $55,000/year or less, which is only half the amount a family of four needs in Montgomery County to meet basic needs without assistance. Most of the youth who will receive backpacks and supplies are immigrants or children of immigrants who fled their homelands in Latin America due to civil wars, violence, political instability, and economic crises. A common consequence of this situation is family separation; approximately one-third of Identity youth have experienced a separation from one or both parents due to immigration for an average of 9 years.

We also know many immigrant youth exhibit extraordinary resilience, and research shows many experience post-traumatic growth – a deep sense of self, optimism, gratitude, pride and of giving back to the community and their adopted country.
