Dr. Fauci, 81, Expected to Retire by End of Biden’s First Term

NBC: Dr. Anthony Fauci will likely retire by the end of President Joe Biden’s term in January 2025. Fauci has directed the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases since 1984. He has also served as Biden’s chief medical adviser since January 2021. “I have always said that sometime in the reasonable future, I would be stepping down,” Fauci told NBC News. “Thus sometime between now and then I very likely will step down and move on to the next phase in my professional career, whatever that may be.” At age 81, Fauci added, “I do not plan to be in this position forever” (NBC). Fox News: Fauci was a regular guest on cable news, primetime television, late-night shows and podcasts offering his medical advice throughout the pandemic. Over time, he became a politically divisive figure on the left and right regarding issues such as masks and lockdown policies… The Biden administration vaccine-or-test requirements and mask mandates have been struck down by federal courts, and many Republicans are running on platforms this year opposing lockdown measures (Fox News).

Killing of Greenwood Park Mall Shooter by 22-Year-Old “Good Samaritan” Gets Mixed Reaction From Media

NBC: Four people were dead, including the suspected shooter, after a man with a long gun entered a mall south of Indianapolis and opened fire, police said. Two others were injured in the early evening attack at Greenwood Park Mall, Jim Ison, the police chief of Greenwood, Indiana, said at a Sunday night news conference. One remained hospitalized, he said. A 12-year-old girl with abrasions was treated and released. Four of six people who were injured or killed were female, Ison said. The shooter appeared to have been fatally shot by a 22-year-old “good Samaritan” who witnessed the attack and opened fire with a handgun with the intention of ending the assault, Ison said. “The real hero of the day was the Samaritan that was lawfully carrying a firearm who was able to stop the shooter almost as soon as it began,” Ison said. Greenwood Mayor Mark W. Myers also praised the “Good Samaritan” who stepped in, saying in a statement Sunday evening, “This person saved lives tonight” (NBC). The heroic efforts by the “Good Samaritan” were not recognized by all however (Twitter). Salem host Mike Gallagher: Gun-free zones get people killed, period. And this shooting proves it. Once again, the Second Amendment prevails. Once again, Americans are reminded of the obvious solution to mass shootings in public places. And here is a textbook example (Daybreak Daily).

Democrats Move Quickly to Codify Gay Marriage as Justice Thomas Says Court Should “Reconsider”

Insider: Conservative Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas wrote in his concurring opinion in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health that the high court should “reconsider all of this Court’s substantive due process precedents, including Griswold, Lawrence and Obergefell,” also naming the decisions establishing the right to contraception and invalidating anti-sodomy laws. A group of largely Democratic lawmakers introduced legislation in both the House and Senate on Monday called the “Respect of Marriage Act,” which would codify Obergefell into law, protecting same-sex and interracial marriage. This comes shortly after President Joe Biden signed an executive order to protect abortion access after the constitutional right was stripped and given back to the states to regulate access (Insider). Axios: “I look forward to bringing it to the floor for a vote this week,” House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer (D-Md.) said in a statement. Senate Majority Whip Dick Durbin (D-Ill.) told Axios last week that, when the legislation reaches the Senate, it will be a top priority for him. But despite the bill having bipartisan support from the outset, it’s unclear whether it will garner the GOP votes needed to bypass a filibuster: More than 20 GOP senators declined to stake out positions on the issue in interviews with Axios. What they’re saying: DOMA was rendered inert by the Supreme Court’s ruling in Obergefell v. Hodges in 2015, but lawmakers say taking the law off the books altogether is a necessary post-Roe move. “If Justice Thomas’ concurrence teaches anything it’s that we cannot let your guard down or the rights and freedoms that we have come to cherish will vanish into a cloud of radical ideology and dubious legal reasoning,” said House Judiciary Chair Jerrold Nadler (D-N.Y.) in a statement (Axios).

Poll: Biden’s Economic Numbers 11 Points Lower Than Trump’s Worst

CNBC: President Joe Biden’s overall and economic approval numbers have reached the lowest levels of his presidency and fallen further than that of either of his two predecessors, according to the latest CNBC All-America Economic Survey. With Americans feeling crushed beneath the weight of rising prices, Biden’s economic approval dropped 5 points from the prior survey in April to just 30%. The president’s economic record is supported by just 6% of Republicans, 25% of independents and 58% of Democrats, a very low number for his own party. In comparison, President Donald Trump’s economic approval bottomed out at 41%, and President Barack Obama’s at 37%. Biden’s approval on his overall handling of the presidency came in at 36%, 1 point lower than Trump’s worst rating. Among survey participants, 57% disapprove of Biden’s handling of the presidency (CNBC). Daily Wire: The poll revealed that inflation is “by far the top concern” ahead of the midterm elections, garnering more mindspace among respondents than abortion, crime, immigration, jobs, and climate change. The Republican Party appears to be leading among those concerned with economic issues — for example, voters most concerned with inflation prefer Republican control of Congress 47% to 38% (Daily Wire).

Mayor Muriel Bowser Feels Pressure of Bussed Illegal Immigrants to DC

Townhall: D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser appeared on CBS’s “Face the Nation” on Sunday and talked about the homelessness crisis facing the district, which is a sanctuary city. When asked about how illegal immigrants are contributing to the problem given that they’re being bused in from border states, Bowser admitted it has become a “significant issue.” In late May, Abbott said he had sent 45 buses of illegal immigrants to the nation’s capital so far and vowed to keep it up (Townhall). Benny Johnson: DC Mayor Muriel Bowser says illegal immigrants are being ‘tricked’ into getting on buses to Washington and that the Federal Government needs to take action to prevent it (Twitter). AM Greatness Senior Fellow Ned Ryun: Oh. I see. So not really for illegal immigration when it’s in your backyard. Other people’s backyards, thousands of miles away, is totally fine, however… (Twitter).

J.K. Rowling Decries Woke Policy Allowing Men to Accompany “Extremely Vulnerable” Disabled Girls to the Bathroom

Daily Wire: In a series of posts on social media, “Harry Potter” author J.K. Rowling spoke out against a woke policy that is reportedly taking place at a school that she says endangers “extremely vulnerable teenage girls.” Rowling shared an article on Twitter that was reportedly written by unnamed parents with a daughter who is a “severely learning-disabled” 16-year-old. The report says that a policy change at the school will now allow men to take their daughter to the bathroom one-on-one, “behind a closed door.” The school’s governing body decided to “remove cross-gender consent from the personal and intimate care policy,” according to the article (Daily Wire). J.K. Rowling: I cannot overstate my contempt for those supporting policies that endanger extremely vulnerable girls. This is a travesty. Have we learned nothing from successive abuse scandals? Do we value the disabled so little (Twitter)? Fox News: Rowling has faced criticism from progressive pundits over her stance on transgenderism, particularly as it relates to children and women’s opportunities, like sports (Fox News).

Russia to Target Weaponry Provided to Ukraine by Western Countries

Wall Street Journal: Russia ordered its forces to target the long-range missiles and artillery weapons that Western countries have recently supplied to Ukraine, a sign of how Kyiv’s additional firepower has begun to reshape the conflict. On Monday, Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu told a group of Russian troops to make Ukraine’s long-range weaponry a priority target to prevent shelling in parts of eastern Ukraine held by Russian forces, according to the Russian Defense Ministry. A recent shipment of advanced Western weapons has reinforced Ukraine’s efforts to fend off Russia’s invasion. Whether those weapons will enable Kyiv to turn the tide remains unclear, say Western officials. U.S. Himars mobile rocket launchers and other systems from North Atlantic Treaty Organization countries have enabled Ukraine to strike Russian bases far behind the front lines, including ammunition depots. The Pentagon has dispatched eight Himars to Ukraine and has pledged to deliver another four. Ukraine’s defense minister, Oleksii Reznikov, said last week that Kyiv had also received the first M270 multiple-launch rocket systems pledged by the U.K., Germany and Norway (Wall Street Journal). MSN: Ukrainian forces have been cautious in using the Western-supplied artillery systems. Whenever they fire these systems, they risk giving away their position to Russian troops who are ready with observation drones and heavy artillery. The Western missile launchers and artillery are also mounted on trucks, allowing them to relocate quickly upon firing, frustrating Russia’s efforts to strike back. As the West ferries long-range weapons into Ukraine, Russia’s military has stepped up missile strikes on positions that are far from the front lines. Some of these strikes have led to mass casualties, such as one at a train station in Kramatorsk, where nearly 60 were killed and more than 100 injured, and another at a shopping mall in Kremenchuk that killed at least 20. Earlier this month, a Russian missile strike on a five-story structure in Chasiv Yar, in the Donetsk region, killed at least 48 (MSN).

Heat Wave Ravages Europe

Associated Press: A heat wave broiling Europe spilled northward Monday to Britain and fueled ferocious wildfires in Spain and France, which evacuated thousands of people and scrambled water-bombing planes and firefighters to battle flames in tinder-dry forests. Two people were killed in the blazes in Spain that its prime minister linked to global warming, saying, “Climate change kills.” That toll comes on top of the hundreds of heat-related deaths reported in the Iberian peninsula, as high temperatures have gripped the continent in recent days and triggered wildfires from Portugal to the Balkans. Some areas, including northern Italy, are also experiencing extended droughts. Climate change makes such life-threatening extremes less of a rarity — and heat waves have come even to places like Britain, which braced for possible record-breaking temperatures. The hot weather in the U.K. was expected to be so severe this week that train operators warned it could warp the rails and some schools set up wading pools to help children cool off (Associated Press). Washington Post: Britain is bracing this week for what could be its hottest day ever recorded, while French authorities warned of a “heat apocalypse” and emergency services across Europe confronted spreading wildfires and rising death tolls. Heat records toppled in several places Monday, as Wales reported a new all-time high and Ireland registered its highest air temperature in more than a century. Temperatures hovered just below 104 degrees (40 Celsius) in many areas of France on Monday but are expected to exceed that threshold in Paris and elsewhere Tuesday. British authorities declared a national emergency and for the first time issued a “red extreme” heat warning for large parts of England, while France’s meteorological service placed a stretch of its Atlantic coast under the highest-possible alert level (Washington Post).

Liz Cheney Trails Primary Opponent by 22 Points, Prominent Role in J6 Committee Cited as Reason

Casper Star Tribune: Former President Donald Trump’s pick to unseat Rep. Liz Cheney in the race for Wyoming’s lone House seat holds a commanding 22-point lead with a month until the primary, a new Casper Star-Tribune poll shows. Natural resources attorney Harriet Hageman leads Cheney 52% to 30%, the poll shows. No other challenger received more than 5% support. Only 11% of voters were undecided (Casper Star Tribune). Washington Examiner: Most coverage of her predicament has focused on her starring role with the Jan. 6 committee, and especially on her vow to make sure that, one way or another, former President Donald Trump will not be the Republican nominee for president in 2024. Trump, of course, is popular in Wyoming. He won the state in 2016 with 68.2% of the vote to Hillary Clinton’s 21.9%. In 2020, Trump won with 69.9% to Joe Biden’s 26.6% (Washington Examiner).

Trump Advisor Dr. Deborah Birx Claims Coronavirus Came Out of Chinese Lab “Ready to Infect”

Daily Mail: Infectious diseases expert and former presidential Covid adviser Dr Deborah Birx told The Mail that coronavirus ‘came out of the box ready to infect’ when it emerged in the Chinese city of Wuhan in December 2020. The adviser said most viruses take months or years to become highly infectious to humans. But, Dr Birx said, Covid ‘was already more infectious than flu when it first arrived’. She said that meant Covid was either an ‘abnormal thing of nature’ or that Chinese scientists were ‘working on coronavirus vaccines’ and became infected… She accused China of initially covering up how infectious Covid was. Birx said Covid’s infectiousness was consistent with a virus which had been experimented on in a lab (Daily Mail). Epoch Times: While some news outlets and so-called fact-checking websites labeled the lab leak hypothesis as a conspiracy theory, top U.S. officials conceded later in 2021 that it’s within the realm of possibility. A report released by the 17-agency Intelligence Community in 2021 shows that some federal officials believe the virus emerged from the Wuhan laboratory, according to the White House in a May 26 news release. Chinese officials, meanwhile, have claimed the virus was first found in December 2019, emerging from a wet market in Wuhan about 10 miles from the lab’s location. It was later revealed by the National Institutes of Health that it provided funding to researchers who were carrying out research on bat coronaviruses… In March 2021, former Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Director Robert Redfield told CNN that he believes the virus emerged from the Wuhan facility (Epoch Times).
