Cars and light trucks account for about 45% of all U.S. oil consumption as well as being a major source of climate pollution.
Rapidly ensuring all newly-built passenger vehicles are zero-emitting is one of the most effective ways we can reduce climate and air pollution. Less pollution will mean healthier and longer lives for millions of people, especially low-income neighborhoods and communities of color that are more likely to be harmed by transportation-related pollution.
According to a recent EDF analysis, national standards that ensure all new light-duty vehicle sales are zero-pollution by 2035 would:
- Avoid more than 600 million metric tons of climate pollution in 2040 — that’s equivalent to Canada’s entire annual climate footprint!
- Prevent as many as 5,000 premature deaths per year by 2040, with nearly 100,000 total premature deaths prevented by 2050.
- Save U.S. drivers $88 billion annually by 2040 in economic and pollution benefits and nearly $1.6 trillion cumulatively by 2050.
The Biden Administration plans to propose new pollution standards for model years 2027-2030, and your support could mean the difference between rigorous protections that rise to meet the challenge of the climate crisis…or watered-down standards that fail to prevent the worst consequences of climate change.
Your donation to EDF’s Summer Match will go three times as far to put the U.S. on the path to a fully zero-pollution transportation sector within the next two decades.
Now is our moment — we have no time left to waste. Will you help power the clean transportation revolution?
In gratitude and with hope for a better shared future,
