Friend,
I wanted to let you know that the 9-8-8 line – the new three-digit number to contact for mental health, substance use and suicide crises – is officially live nationwide.
This is an impressive, long overdue achievement, and the result of bipartisan effort in Congress. Along with my colleagues, I helped introduce legislation to authorize 988 as the new three-digit number for the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline, and I am grateful that after years of hard work, this resource is a reality.
Now, if you are experiencing a mental health crisis or any form of distress and in need of help, you can dial 9-8-8 to receive support from a professional. This line is free and confidential, open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, and available to anyone calling within the United States.
As we all know, suicide is an epidemic in our country – one that I’m sure has tragically touched each one of us in some way. It’s important that we ensure every American has access to proper mental health care and that we work to reduce the stigma around accessing that care.
If you or someone you know is struggling, remember that there are resources for you and people who want to help. I encourage you to reach out to the 9-8-8 hotline to learn more about the options available to you.
Semper Fi,
