For the first time in history, legislation has been introduced to declare climate change a national emergency.

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Bernie Sanders, in the House and Senate respectively, have put forth this historic bill: But it hasn't even been scheduled for a single hearing.

Inaction isn't an option: Demand Congress act on AOC's and Bernie Sanders' legislation to declare climate change an emergency >>

The legislation makes it clear what is at stake:

Global warming is "a climate emergency that severely and urgently impacts the economic and social well-being, health and safety, and national security of the United States."

We are calling for "a national, social, industrial, and economic mobilization of the resources and labor of the United States at a massive-scale to halt, reverse, mitigate, and prepare for the consequences of the climate emergency and to restore the climate for future generations."

More than a dozen other countries and hundreds of cities and states across the United States are taking similar steps.

And there's merit for declaring an emergency: Climate change is an existential threat to humanity, jeopardizes global security, and these next couple of years will be decisive in terms of whether or not we can stave off the worst case scenarios scientists are theorizing.
