John,
I’ve long believed that the foundation of a successful democracy is transparency. The people deserve to know what their leaders are doing with the power they are trusted with.
Unfortunately, transparency has not been the status quo in our Congress. While millions of Americans were struggling with the financial ramifications of the pandemic, members of Congress were getting richer by profiting off privileged information that they have access to.
In Congress, legislators in both parties have used their positions to amass large scale personal wealth. They use their access to privileged information to buy and sell stocks ahead of the market. This abuse of power must end.
Members of Congress simply should not be allowed to trade individual stocks. Trading on insider knowledge can also only lead to one thing: affecting policy for profit. In Congress I will prioritize passing legislation that bans our representatives from trading stocks.
