ACLU Supporter –

Gabino Medina's story is exactly why we must end our nation's cruel ICE detention system. <[link removed]> In January of this year, he was being held at an ICE detention facility in Ohio. Gabino tried to reach his immigration attorney several times – but the calls wouldn't go through.

When he informed facility officials that there were issues with his phone account, he was told not to worry – that he would soon be transferred to another facility and his account would work again soon. A few days later, he was in Mexico.

Gabino didn't discover that he was going to be deported until he landed in Mexico – a country he had not lived in since he was five, far away from all his loved ones. Sadly, his experience is not unique.

Each day, ICE locks up tens of thousands of people in its detention facilities nationwide. Three out of four detained people who are in removal proceedings do not have counsel. Meanwhile, according to our latest investigation, attorneys at nearly half of the detention facilities for which we received survey responses reported arbitrary delays or denial of access to their clients.

This unjust reality is only more damning evidence of a cruel system that denies due process at every turn – and we cannot stop speaking out for the people who continue to be harmed by its abuses.

We know there are so many civil liberties to fight for right now, ACLU Supporter. But if you have a few moments to spare, then please use your voice in solidarity with the countless people in detention being silenced – and tell DHS to shut down the ICE detention machine once and for all. <[link removed]>

Take Action <[link removed]>

ACLU Supporter, when people detained by ICE are denied communication with their attorneys, it increases the chance they'll be detained for long periods of time – or worse, deported in violation of their constitutional rights. For people fleeing violence, access to counsel can be a matter of life or death.

And the problems don't stop there. Over the past several decades, ICE has become notorious for its abuse, pervasive medical neglect, and complete disregard for the dignity of people. During the pandemic, reports emerged of increased use of force, patterns of sexual abuse, unprecedented fatality rates, and an utter failure to protect people from COVID-19.

There's no question: ICE detention must end. We've been urging the Biden Administration and DHS to phase out this inhumane system since it took office – so our country can invest in more effective community-based social services instead. But given their utter lack of action so far, it's clear they need to feel this pressure from the public too. They need to hear from you, ACLU Supporter.

So please, send a quick message to DHS and tell them to end the ICE detention machine now. <[link removed]>

And together, we will fight for the safety and rights of immigrants trapped in detention nationwide.
