“As Ohio goes, so goes the nation” was a political truism for 50 years. While Ohio may no longer be the bellwether of American Presidential politics, the race to replace retiring Republican Sen. Rob Portman will be pivotal in determining the outcome of the 2022 elections nationally.

Why is Ohio still important to all of us?
The Buckeye State presents pro-democracy forces with one of their best opportunities to flip a GOP-held seat and extend control of the Senate. The race features Republican candidate, investment banker, and Hillbilly Elegy author J.D. Vance, who harshly criticized Trump in 2016 but quickly converted to Ultra-MAGA to receive the disgraced ex-President’s coveted endorsement. Vance has morphed into a rabid opportunist, who will be or say anything to win.
Vance expressed his disgust towards candidate Trump in 2016. Now he does the ex-President’s bidding.
On the Democratic side is Congressman Tim Ryan of Youngstown, whose approach fuses progressive working-class economic views with a populist cultural-consensus appeal that fits the area he represents.

With rightwing billionaire Peter Thiel bankrolling Vance, this race will be one of the most expensive in the country and one of the tightest. It will be critical for the Ryan campaign to ensure turnout in the African-American communities of Toledo and Cleveland, as well as the student vote in Columbus and other college towns across Ohio. It’s also important that he wins support from moderate Republicans who see Vance as a threat to our democracy, willing to do Trump’s bidding.
