I’ve been getting a lot of questions lately about why I wear combat boots every day. Rather than loafers or tennis shoes as you’ll typically see candidates in, I wear my combat boots as a reminder of where I come from, and what we’re fighting for.
I joined the military after 9/11, and served in Iraq as a Navy flight surgeon.
Upon returning home, I continued to provide medical care for my fellow veterans at my hospital and volunteering at local free clinics. I met servicemember after servicemember who was struggling to find a job, get housing, or access care for the health issues their military service caused.
I became increasingly upset that our elected officials were paying lip service to us on the holidays, while continuing to ignore our struggling veteran’s needs.
And then the January 6 attack on the Capitol happened. We witnessed a direct attempt by domestic terrorists to undermine our democracy — the democracy my fellow veterans fought for — while elected “leaders” egged them on. Me and the friends I served with in Iraq were disgusted.
I decided to run for Congress, and now I wear these combat boots to remind me where I come from, and what we’re fighting for – a country that cares deeply about protecting our neighbors, our environment, and our democracy.
Sincerely,
Dr. Kermit
