To my mind, global climate change is the single greatest threat facing the planet. It poses an existential threat to our country, and our world.
Now, skeptics call me alarmist. And they are right, I am alarmed.
I am deeply alarmed the polar ice caps are melting at an alarming rate, the oceans are warming, and that if we do not act, by the end of the century major cities in the US and all over the world will be underwater.
I am deeply alarmed that failure to act will mean more drought, more famine, more extreme weather disturbances, more disease and more human suffering.
That is why I have proposed the largest and most comprehensive climate change program ever presented by any candidate in the history of the United States. One we must adopt, because this issue is about nothing less than the survival of the human race.
But I cannot do it alone. The fossil fuel industry will do and spend whatever it takes to stop us, because they are more than willing to put their profits over the future of our planet. So I have to ask:
People also tell me that our plan is unrealistic.
But to them I say, is it realistic to not listen to the scientists and to create a situation where the planet where our children and future generations will be living in is increasingly uninhabitable and unhealthy?
Is that realistic?
What we must do and what the scientists tell us is imperative is that we transform our energy system away from fossil fuel and into sustainable energy.
And the only way that is possible is to build an unprecedented grassroots movement powerful enough to take on the fossil fuel industry and win.
When we are in the White House, that is just what we will do. But I cannot do it alone. So I am asking:
This is a pivotal moment in American and world history where we are literally fighting for the future of our planet, and the well-being of future generations.
