We’ve further extended the fuel tax cut, reduced road user charges and half price public transport.

Morning John,

I’ll keep this short - I just wanted to make sure you’d heard about our latest step to support Kiwis with the cost of living.

We’ve just extended the fuel tax cut, reduced road user charges and half price public transport for everyone until the end of January next year.

The world is a volatile and uncertain place right now. We know that inflation is rising across the world. Cost of living pressures are making it tough across New Zealand right now, and people are feeling the pinch of rising prices.

This extension is one way we can help ease this pressure, and provide more certainty in the face of volatile prices at the pump. It will also help reduce the fuel burden on businesses, keeping the cost of food and essential goods lower across the board. If you missed the announcement, you can watch the full press conference here.

This is just one of the actions we’re taking to support New Zealanders with current cost pressures.

The first of the new cost of living payments will go out in two weeks’ time, supporting around 2.1 million people with their bills. We’ve already boosted Superannuation, main benefits, student allowance, and parental leave payments, and we have the Winter Energy Payment to help people through the colder months. We’re also continuing our work on supermarkets, to ensure everyone gets a fairer price at the checkout. You can read more about everything we’re doing to help ease the pressure here.

There’s no easy fix for the cost of living, but we’re committed to supporting New Zealanders through. I hope this latest step will make things a little easier for you and your family.

Thanks,
Grant Robertson
