John,

My opponent Rep. Ken Calvert is seeking his 16th term in Congress -- making him the longest serving California Republican in Congress.

He’s made a name for himself over the years as a staunch opponent of LGTBQ rights. But now that he’s been redistricted into Palm Springs, he's trying to soften his radical, anti-LGBTQ record with voters in our district.

We're not falling for it: Calvert’s political career began with homophobia.

In his very first reelection campaign, Ken Calvert sent out homophobic mailers attacking his then opponent Rep. Mark Takano for being a gay man.

His bright pink mailers asked voters if they "knew the real Mark Takano..." and sounded the alarm about Takano's "secret" homosexual agenda.

It wasn't long ago that being gay was literally a crime in some states, and as an openly gay candidate for Congress, I'm grateful for LGBTQ leaders like Rep. Mark Takano who paved the way for me to run for office today -- even if it meant enduring the hatred and homophobia of guys like Calvert.

Times have changed, but Calvert's attacks on LGBTQ Americans have not. He is still a staunch opponent of gay marriage. He voted against gay adoptions, voted down the Equality Act, and even voted to allow employers to fire employees simply for being LGBTQ. He also voted against the repeal of the military’s “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” policy which is personal for me because it discouraged me from serving my country after 9/11.

I can't think of a stronger rebuke of Calvert's anti-LGBTQ agenda than by replacing him with a gay American who will fight for equal rights. If you’re with me, I hope you’ll chip in a donation of $3 today.

In Rep. Takano’s own words, “it will be an irony, a real twist, if an LGBTQ prosecutor defeats congressman Calvert this November.” Together we can make that happen.

Thank you,

Will Rollins
