On Thursday, I was incredibly humbled to pay tribute to the last WWII Medal of Honor recipient, U.S. Marine Corps veteran Hershel Woodrow "Woody" Williams, as he lay in honor in the Capitol.
Woody was awarded the Medal of Honor by President Truman in 1945 for his "extraordinary heroism" during the Battle of Iwo Jima. He single-handedly operated six flamethrowers against Japanese forces for hours, clearing the path for American troops.
He was a member of the Greatest Generation and truly deserving of our gratitude and respect.
