It’s a simple question, Governor.

Folks,

Last weekend, Glenn Youngkin was asked plainly on CBS’s Face the Nation if he would take the necessary steps to protect same-sex marriage in Virginia, in the event that the conservative-packed U.S. Supreme Court were to overturn Obergefell v. Hodges.

Rather than providing a resounding YES to what should be a simple question, Glenn Youngkin danced around the question, with dog-whistle phrases like “returning the rights to states” and “protecting the right of lawmakers to make laws.”

Pushed on it once more, Glenn Youngkin claimed same sex marriage was already protected in Virginia. Perhaps someone should loan Glenn Youngkin a history textbook: this is simply not true.

Same sex marriage remains banned in the Code of Virginia, and if the Supreme Court were ever to “return the power” back to the states on this issue, same sex marriage would become illegal in Virginia. In fact, earlier this very year, the Virginia GOP blocked a proposal to codify marriage equality in the Commonwealth.

The Governor’s comments show that he either has no clue what is actually in Virginia’s Constitution, or he is actively choosing to lie to Virginians. Either way, we should not have to wonder whether our Governor is incompetent or just a liar.

We need to elect pro-LGBTQ Democrats to the General Assembly to protect marriage equality, and we need your help. Will you chip in right now to help us protect Virginians from Glenn Youngkin?
