Gov. Justice announced Wednesday that he has approved the bid award for a major project to improve traffic flow and relieve congestion near West Virginia University in Morgantown. Much of the funding for the project comes from bond sales through Gov. Justice’s Roads to Prosperity program.
The contract for the project has been awarded to Bear Contracting LLC, with a bid of $5,478,899.91.

The West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources through its Center for Threat Preparedness and the State Epidemiologist are helping to create safer environments for campers and staff by offering free COVID-19 antigen test kits to summer camps across the state. To date, the Center for Threat Preparedness has distributed 18,246 test kits to 32 camps.

Gov. Justice declared a State of Emergency for McDowell County Thursday due to excessive rainfall on Monday, July 12, 2022, which caused significant flooding that damaged over 75 homes, approximately a dozen bridges, and numerous roads throughout the county. The storm also resulted in downed trees, power outages, and disruption to potable water systems.

West Virginia Division of Highways cleanup crews were working around the clock this week to clean up debris and plan repairs to roads damaged by flash flooding near the communities of Warriormine and Berwind in McDowell County. Heavy rains on the evening of Tuesday, July 12, created localized flash flooding in the areas of War, Warriormine, and Berwind.

Eight paving projects are among 14 projects included in a bid letting conducted by the West Virginia Division of Highways on Tuesday, July 12. The paving projects are part of an aggressive summer paving campaign being conducted by the WVDOH. WVDOH is reviewing the bids and hopes to award contracts for these projects soon.

Nearly 1.35 million vehicles drove the West Virginia Turnpike during the 11 days surrounding the July 4 holiday. Heaviest traffic days were Friday, July 1, 2022, when 169,701 vehicles passed through Turnpike toll booths. On Saturday, July 2, 2022, 139,956 vehicles used the Turnpike; 139,227 used the Turnpike on Friday, July 8, 2022; and 137,890 drove the Turnpike on Saturday, July 9, 2022.

Restoration work has begun on the historic Carrollton Covered Bridge in Barbour County, with local West Virginia Division of Highways bridge crews doing the work. The bridge, the third oldest of 17 surviving covered bridge in West Virginia, was badly damaged by a fire in August 2017. The blaze destroyed much of the outer covering of the bridge but left the basic structure mostly intact.

The West Virginia Department of Arts, Culture and History will celebrate its 45th anniversary on Saturday, July 16, at 2 p.m. at the Culture Center in Charleston. The event will be free and open to the public, and refreshments will be available to visitors. The WVDACH will be selling two limited-edition Blenko glass pieces. One piece will represent the anniversary of the department and the other will commemorate West Virginia’s birthday on June 20.

The West Virginia Governor’s Highway Safety Program (GHSP) reminds drivers to slow down and obey the speed limit ahead of a statewide high visibility enforcement (HVE) period that will begin with a kickoff enforcement event on July 15 from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., to be conducted by local law enforcement agencies. The targeted enforcement will continue through July 31.
