John: The Brazilian Space Agency recently asserted that our worst fears about the health of the Amazon rainforest are coming true — in the first 6 months of 2022, deforestation has hit record highs.

An area 5 times the size of New York City has already been cleared in these 6 months.

Why does this matter? → The Amazon rainforest is one of the Earth’s most vital “carbon sinks,” which means it absorbs a large portion of the carbon dioxide in the air. This is extremely important, especially as countries around the world struggle to get carbon emissions under control. The Amazon also stabilizes certain weather patterns due to the water in the air surrounding the canopies, including in Mexico and America.

What does this mean? → Deforestation is deeply harmful to rainforests and our global environment at large. At this rate, the Amazon’s ability to minimize carbon output via absorption and balance our weather systems is on track to soon be nothing but a memory.

SEEC members are working to stop sweeping deforestation efforts like those in the Amazon and preserve the natural defenses to climate change our earth has developed. They’ve championed efforts like SEEC Member Rep. Earl Blumenauer’s FOREST Act, which would prohibit the importing of palm oil, soybeans, cattle, rubber, pulp, and cocoa from illegally deforested land. These six commodities are the major drivers behind deforestation.

We’re working on re-electing SEEC members so they can continue their efforts to pass commonsense policies that address the deforestation crisis head-on. But to re-elect them, we need your support, John.

Thanks to your help in 2020, SEEC PAC was able to re-elect over 95% of our pro-environment members to the U.S. House of Representatives — defying the odds on a night where Democrats lost seats. Now we are counting on you to help our SEEC members pass climate, clean energy and environmental justice policies in the 117th Congress while we undo the damage of the Trump Administration.
