John,
Billionaires are throwing their weight around in some of the most pivotal U.S. Senate races of 2022, hoping to elect candidates who are hostile to democracy, abortion rights and Social Security―and very much anti-tax and pro-billionaire.
They want to continue the gridlock in Congress, and put politicians in power who will say “no” to raising taxes on the wealthy and corporations. Just this week we saw what a difference a single Senate seat can make when Sen. Joe Manchin (D-WV) pulled his support for policies that would make the rich and corporations pay a fairer share. We need more senators who will hold the Billionaires Class accountable.
Just look at this headline:[1]
Americans for Tax Fairness just released a new report detailing billionaires buying elections. And, we just organized national allies to rally millions of voters to push members of Congress to act.
We’re demanding billionaires pay their fair share of taxes each year, just like you and I. When they do, they’ll have a lot less to spend on destroying our democracy and rigging our tax system.
Pitch in today to fight for a democracy that’s of the people and by the people, not of the billionaires, by the billionaires.
In Georgia, billionaires are falling head over heels for former NFL running back, and major Trumper, Herschel Walker in his Senate race against incumbent Senator Raphael Warnock.
Billionaires including Home Depot co-founder Bernie Marcus, industrialist Dennis Washington, investors Charles B. Johnson and Nelson Peltz, oil and gas magnates Trevor and Jan Rees-Jones, ex-casino mogul and ex-RNC Finance Chair Steve Wynn have all donated at least $100,000 to a pro-Herschel Walker and anti-Raphael Warnock super PAC.
Other billionaires pitching in to defeat Warnock include banker Andrew Beal, Trump business partner Phil Ruffin, Excel Communications founder Kenny Troutt, ABC Supply cofounder Diane Hendricks, and Leslie Liautaud, the wife of Jimmy John’s founder Jimmy John Liautaud. They have all donated to Trump-founded super PACs that have spent nearly $200,000 on ads against Warnock.
In the 2020 election, billionaires spent $1.2 billion attempting to buy our democracy―40 times more than they’d spent just a decade prior. In order to rein in the undue influence of billionaire money in our elections and our democracy, it’s time for America’s roughly 750 billionaires to pay taxes on their wealth gains each year, not just when they feel like it.
We’re watching the power of their dark, dirty money play out in real time as they influence members of Congress to torpedo tax fairness proposals. We’re demanding Congress listen to working people, not the billionaire-interests.
