Learn more about what my office has been up to this week Dear john, I spent this week in Washington working on behalf of our community for safer gun laws, reproductive freedom, and improved care for our nation's veterans. Here are a few highlights from the week: On Monday, I had the honor of attending the White House Ceremony commemorating the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act. Advocating for laws to prevent gun violence has been my life's mission since I lost my son Jordan in 2012. I was deeply moved to be with so many advocates and survivors of gun violence to commemorate this accomplishment and rededicate ourselves to our continued work to save lives. Later in the week, my House colleagues and I passed the Active Shooter Alert Act, which will allow law enforcement to alert the public of nearby active shooting incidents, similar to AMBER Alert messages. On Thursday, I spoke up in a House Judiciary Committee hearing on privacy and civil rights in light of the recent Supreme Court decision to overturn Roe v. Wade. You can view my remarks by clicking the image above. Yesterday, I voted to pass the Women's Health Protection Act and the Ensuring Women's Right to Reproductive Freedom Act, bills that are critical to protecting reproductive rights for Americans in light of the Dobbs decision. This week, the House also passed the National Defense Authorization Act, which will provide a pay raise for servicemembers, invest in HBCU research funding, and make improvements in supply chain security. Prior to passage of the NDAA, I was also proud to support passage of the Honoring our PACT Act, which will expand VA healthcare eligibility to Post-9/11 combat veterans, address issues impacting toxic exposed veterans’ access to earned benefits and care, and make needed investments in VA claims processing. Finally, my Georgia colleagues and I were proud to introduce a bill which would rename the Atlanta VA Regional Office after former Senator Johnny Isakson. You can read our delegation letter to the House and Senate Committees on Veterans' Affairs by clicking here. It was a busy week in Washington, and it remains an honor and a privilege to represent our community in Congress.
