John,
John Galvan and Arthur Almendarez were wrongly arrested in 1987. Two years later, they were convicted of aggravated arson and first-degree murder and sentenced to life without parole.
But today, after spending 35 years in prison for a crime they didn’t commit, both John and Arthur were released on an “I bond” from Cook County Jail in Chicago, Illinois. Arthur is represented by Joshua Tepfer of the Exoneration Project.

John was convicted based on a coerced confession that he says involved the use of police torture — including being handcuffed to a wall and beaten — and invalidated arson science testimony by a Chicago arson investigator.
“We have been waiting for this day for 35 years,” Arthur’s sister Laura Guevara told CBS News, while waiting outside the jail for her brother to be released. “It’s overdue.”
We’re glad that both John and Arthur are no longer wrongly incarcerated, and that they can now be with their families while they continue the fight to be fully exonerated.
