Last week, I had the privilege of traveling to central and eastern Europe to meet with our brave men and women in uniform and discuss our efforts to support the people of Ukraine against Vladimir Putin’s unprovoked invasion. During my time in Germany, Poland, and Austria, I discussed the situation on the ground with American servicemembers, intelligence analysts, and humanitarian aid workers. Everywhere I went, I was impressed by the work our men and women are doing, as well as everything I learned about the strength, resilience, and ingenuity of the Ukrainians in holding back the Russian advance and making the most of all the supplies and military aid that we’ve provided them with. Fundamentally, supporting the Ukrainians is about defending democracy, not only in Ukraine, but around the world.

On Monday, I was joined by State Rep. Michelle Mussman as I hosted an in-person town hall meeting in Schaumburg, focused on issues including the recent Supreme Court rulings and the tragic July 4th attack in Highland Park. I want to thank everyone who attended for their thoughtful questions and civil discussion of admittedly very challenging issues. While some attendees disagreed with my support for defending reproductive rights and for expanding gun control to get weapons of war off our streets, I was grateful that our discussion remained productive and substantive throughout and look forward to continuing that dynamic at future events.

On Wednesday, the House Oversight Committee held a hearing on the increasing criminalization of women’s health care procedures, especially in the wake of the Supreme Court’s unprecedented and outrageous decision to overturn Roe v. Wade and Planned Parenthood v. Casey. Women around the country, particularly those of color and from low-income backgrounds, are at higher risk of arrest for abortions, miscarriages, and other pregnancy-related charges. As I pointed out at the hearing, the number of pregnancy-specific crimes has been rising over the past decade and a half, with 1,331 arrests reported from 2006-2020, more than three times higher than the 413 recorded from 1973-2005. With the protections of Roe now gone, I’m continuing to fight in Congress to strengthen existing laws to shield even more women from those who would further criminalize pregnancies and deny access to reproductive health care. As part of that effort, I’ve partnered with Oversight Committee Chairwoman Carolyn Maloney and Rep. Sara Jacobs to investigate the security of online health care data to prevent those records from being used against women for exercising their reproductive freedom.
