Dear John,
News broke late Thursday night that Sen. Joe Manchin (D-WV) would not support climate measures in the budget reconciliation package the Senate is considering.
As a Citizens’ Climate Lobby volunteer, I know you hoped for a different outcome. I did, too. This is deeply disappointing news for all of us who have worked hard for ambitious climate policies in this reconciliation package.
Here is CCL’s initial statement on the news, which you are welcome to share with others in your chapter or on social media. We will remain in dialogue with our legislative staff and our allies on Capitol Hill as the situation continues to develop, and we will keep you informed about opportunities to take action.
Don’t forget — we have achieved some meaningful progress on climate already in this Congress, such as climate investments in the infrastructure package and getting several supporting bills across the finish line. Take heart that progress is possible, despite today’s setback.
The U.S. still needs to do much more to keep our climate commitments. I’m confident we can build the necessary political will for major climate action if we work together. Thank you for all you have done and all you will do to make that happen.
In gratitude, Madeleine Para
