Dear JOHN,

During a busy week in Congress, I lead the debate on the House floor in support of critical legislation to safeguard women's healthcare, protect families from gun violence, and ensure our servicemembers have access to the benefits and healthcare they've rightly earned. You can read more below.

Following a disastrous ruling by the U.S. Supreme Court in Dobbs v. Jackson, women across America are facing a dark and dangerous era where they no longer have control over their own bodies. States are moving to criminalize a woman’s ability to make her own healthcare decisions, and our fundamental right to privacy is under attack. It’s hard to believe we’re living in 2022, not 1722.

I won’t stand for this assault on women’s rights, which is why this week, I voted in favor of a package of legislation to enact federal protections on reproductive healthcare. Our legislation would codify the provisions of Roe v Wade into law, preventing states from enacting bans on reproductive care. It would also protect women from facing legal consequences of traveling across state lines to access the healthcare services they need. Now, the Senate must join us in taking up this critical legislation immediately—the health and safety of millions of women depend on it.

CONGRESSMAN JOE MORELLE ACTS TO ENSURE A WOMAN’S RIGHT TO REPRODUCTIVE HEALTHCARE IS FEDERALLY PROTECTED

I have long called for common-sense legislation to address the gun violence that plagues our communities, and this week, we took another step forward toward that goal. The legislation we passed would establish an Active Shooter Alert System, similar to AMBER Alerts, to keep community members safe and informed during active shooter situations. It's tragic that we even need to establish such a system to warn our communities about mass shootings—but it's the sad reality we face. This is the very least we can do to help reduce the number of innocent lives lost to gun violence. But we can’t stop here:

👉 We need to ban assault weapons.

👉 We need to limit high-capacity magazines.

👉 We need to enact universal background checks.

👉 We need to stand up to the NRA.

I have made my position clear: meaningful, common-sense gun reform is an absolute necessity, and I’ll keep fighting for stronger and more comprehensive solutions that keep families safe.

Congressman Morelle seeks ban on assault weapons following IL shooting

As a member of the House Armed Services Committee, I have the privilege of helping craft legislation that supports our veterans and our active-duty members of the Armed Forces. One of those bills is the Honoring our Pact Act, which will help right a grave injustice and ensure veterans exposed to toxic substances in the line of duty have access to the essential care and benefits they have rightfully earned. This legislation has now been passed by both the House and Senate, and I look forward to seeing the President sign it into law.

CONGRESSMAN JOE MORELLE STRENGTHENS ESSENTIAL HEALTHCARE FOR VETERANS

The National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) is passed by Congress annually to support our military and provide for our common defense. I am proud to have helped create this important legislation which bolsters our ability to compete with countries like Russia and China, ensures we are prepared protect global security and peace, and makes critical investments in our servicemembers and their families.
