New Dem Leadership Endorses Slate of Public Safety Bills to Prevent Crime & Protect Our Communities ([link removed])

This week, New Democrat Coalition (NDC) Leadership endorsed a slate of seven bills that will address rising public safety concerns across the country by investing in key resources and reforms to prevent crime and protect communities. This endorsement slate builds on the actions New Dems have already taken to improve policing and public safety, including American Rescue Plan, Community Project Funding, and the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act.

The following bills were endorsed:
* H.R. 6375, ([link removed]) the COPS on the Beat Grant Program Reauthorization and Parity Act of 2022, Rep. Abigail Spanberger (VA-07) and Tom Rice (R, SC-07)

New Dems Applaud President Biden’s Decision to Cut Energy Costs for Americans by Reducing Trade Barriers on Solar Products ([link removed]-)

Last week, NDC Chair Suzan DelBene (WA-01) released a statement on President Biden’s decision to lift Trump-era tariffs on Canadian solar products, which will help continue the clean energy transition and lower energy costs for Americans. This decision marks forward progress on the New Dem Action Plan to Fight Inflation ([link removed]) , which called for rolling back harmful Trump-era tariffs to cut costs for American families, businesses, and manufacturers.

New Dem Leadership Endorses Bills to Ensure Every American is Safe via Bloomberg Government ([link removed])

Bloomberg Government ran an exclusive on public safety bills endorsed by New Dem Leadership, noting that over 50% of the bills endorsed by the Coalition have passed in Congress. As the ‘get stuff done’ caucus, New Dems will work to get these bills signed into law to ensure that all our communities are safe.

Houlahan Speaks with Constituents about New Dem Action Plan to Fight Inflation ([link removed])

The Reading Eagle covered New Dem Leadership Member Chrissy Houlahan’s (PA-06) townhall, the 63rd one she’s held since coming to Congress in 2018, where she spoke with constituents about the steps New Dems are taking to tackle inflation.

“Ongoing inflation — fueled by pandemic-related breaks in the supply chain, increased demand for products and the Russian invasion of Ukraine — has sent the cost of things like groceries and gas skyrocketing…For a majority of Americans, it has become the issue that concerns them the most. Houlahan said she’s aware of that and has been working on finding solutions. As a member of the moderate New Democrat Coalition, she joined a group of her colleagues to craft an action plan to fight inflation.” Read more here ([link removed]) .

House Passes Connolly’s Bill to Guarantee Fair Retirement for Federal First Responders Injured on the Job ([link removed])
The House unanimously passed Rep. Gerry Connolly’s (VA-11), H.R. 521 the First Responder Fair RETIRE Act, bipartisan legislation that ensures federal firefighters, law enforcement officers, and other federal first responders qualify for full retirement benefits if they are injured on the job and return to the federal workforce.

House Passes Fletcher’s Bill Protecting the Right to Travel for Abortion ([link removed])

Today, the House passed Rep. Lizzie Fletcher’s (TX-07) bill, H.R. 8297 the Ensuring Women’s Right to Reproductive Freedom Act. This bill protects the right to travel for abortion services and affirms the constitutional right to travel freely throughout the U.S. for any reason. New Dems will keep fighting ([link removed]) to protect women’s individual freedom and codify Roe v. Wade.

Horsford Introduces Legislation to Address Inflated Housing Costs ([link removed])  

In response to the nationwide housing crisis, Rep. Steven Horsford (NV-04) introduced H.R. 8360, The Housing Oversight and Mitigating Exploitation (HOME) Act to address a trend that is creating artificial hikes in rents and property costs and disproportionately harming Black and Latino families. Specifically, the bill will make it illegal to rent or sell housing units at unreasonable prices during housing emergency periods, direct the Secretary of HUD to investigate housing price manipulation and institutional investors, and requiring a congressional report into the impact these investments have on underserved communities.  

Williams and Strickland Introduce Legislation to Help Military Families Access Affordable Housing ([link removed])  

Rep. Nikema Williams (GA-05) and Rep. Marilyn Strickland (WA-10) introduced the bipartisan and bicameral, H.R. 8281 the Military Housing Affordability Act to help servicemembers living in higher-cost areas afford safe, quality housing. Specifically, the bill would grant a two-year extension of the Secretary of Defense’s authority to temporarily adjust the basic allowance for housing (BAH) rates where the cost of adequate housing differs more than 20% from the current BAH rate.  

Spanberger Introduces Legislation to Strengthen America’s Response to Fentanyl Trafficking ([link removed])  

Rep. Abigail Spanberger (VA-07) introduced the bipartisan Securing America’s Borders Against Fentanyl Act to strengthen America’s response to fentanyl coming through the nation’s borders and ports of entry. Specifically, the legislation will increase research and development into technologies and strategies that deter and interdict fentanyl shipments and would require the administration to build new strategies to target and detect fentanyl coming through the southern border.  

Schiff Introduces Legislation to Tackle Illegal Gun Trafficking and Prevent Violent Crime ([link removed])  

Rep. Adam Schiff (CA-28) introduced H.R. 8271, the ATF Data Act to require the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms, and Explosives to publish an annual report on gun trafficking. These reports will include detailed analyses of what types of illegal firearms are being recovered, which regions they’re being recovered from, what crimes they’re being used in, and an investigative overview of how they’re being purchased and diverted into the illegal market. 

Spanberger, Wild, Axne, and Craig Introduce Legislation to Crack Down on Drug Companies and Misleading Ads ([link removed])  

Reps. Abigail Spanberger (VA-07), Susan Wild (PA-07), Cindy Axne (IA-03), and Angie Craig (MN-02) introduced H.R. 8316, the Banning Misleading Drug Ads Act to prevent drug manufacturers from obscuring dangerous side effects of their prescription drugs and help consumers make informed decisions. Specifically, the bill will require the FDA to finalize a proposed rule clarifying that drug ads must include a statement related to side effects and effectiveness and prohibiting distractions from neutral information that prevent consumers from being informed.

Fletcher and Torres Lead Effort to Protect Data Privacy of People Seeking Reproductive Health Care ([link removed])
Reps. Lizzie Fletcher (TX-07) and Norma Torres (CA-35) led 70 of their colleagues in a letter to Federal Trade Commission (FTC) Chair Lina Khan urging the FTC to protect the data privacy of people seeking reproductive health care, including abortion care, by implementing safeguards to stop data brokers from collecting and selling data on an individual’s reproductive health care status or interest. In some states, state legislators have suggested an individual’s location and browsing data could be used against them to pursue prosecution for seeking an abortion, even outside of their state.

Strickland Pushes to Protect Coho Salmon in Puget Sound ([link removed])
Rep. Marilyn Strickland (WA-10) sent a letter to the Puget Sound Regional Council Executive Board calling on them to use federal infrastructure funds to fight 6PPD-quinone, a chemical in tires, which runs off roadways when it rains and kills coho salmon.
