Dog owners and their four-legged friends will soon have a friendly place to gather and play as a community. The Village of Oswego will host a grand opening ceremony for its new Happy Tails Dog Park on Tuesday, Aug. 9 at 4 p.m. Located at 100 Theodore Drive in Oswego, Happy Tails Dog Park is adjacent to Oswego?s Public Works facility. The dog park will officially open to all registered users on Aug. 10.

The 40,000 square foot park is surrounded by fencing featuring two separate areas for small dogs and large dogs, as well as a community training area with agility equipment such as a ramp and tunnel. Located near the main entrance, a water fountain sports a spigot at the bottom to fill water bowls for thirsty pups. While trees and shrubs have been planted, more landscaping will be completed in the coming years. A Dog Hall of Fame will also be established at Happy Tails to honor dogs who have positively impacted Oswego.

?We?re excited to offer this exclusive play spot for dogs and their owners,? Village President Troy Parlier said. ?Happy Tails Dog Park provides a great way to bring people and their pets together.?

To use Happy Tails, all dog owners must register online and pay. The annual fee is $40 for Oswego residents for one dog, and $10 for every additional dog. Non-residents pay $80 for one dog and $15 for each additional dog.

Dog owners must complete the online registration with an official rabies tag number and expiration date. Only credit cards will be accepted for the annual fee. Once verified by staff, dog owners will be notified that a key card will be available for pickup either at Village Hall, 100 Parkers Mill, Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. or the Public Works facility, 100 Theodore Drive, 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday-Friday. For an additional fee, the key card can be mailed. The card will allow entry to Happy Tails from dawn through dusk, 365 days of the year.

The dog park is a ?use at your own risk? facility and owners are responsible for any damage or harm their dog may inflict on Oswego property, people or other dogs. Park rules include bringing no more than two dogs per person, leashing dogs when entering and exiting the park, keeping dogs in view and under voice command, and cleaning up after pets. The following are prohibited: Puppies under six months, dogs that are aggressive, in heat or sick; intact males over the age of 6 months; children under age five; alcoholic beverages; and smoking/vaping.
