Every day we witness more of the extreme lengths to which Republicans are prepared to go to prevent women from making their own reproductive health care choices. That includes efforts in Republican-controlled states to make it a crime for a woman to travel to other states to seek an abortion and to criminalize doctors who perform them.

This extremism is not confined to GOP-run state legislatures; it is also a clear and present danger in the U.S. Senate. Just yesterday, Senate Republicans blocked our effort to bring up a bill that I have co-sponsored to prevent states from criminalizing the efforts of women to travel to other states for abortion health services. It is bad enough that the Supreme Court gave states the green light to strip away rights to reproductive freedom within their own borders. Now Republicans are trying to expand their extremist reach to the rest of the country.

As I have warned before, the Republicans' strategy is a Two-Step Process. First, knock down the constitutional protections of Roe v. Wade. Second, elect anti-choice senators and representatives to push for a federal law banning abortion everywhere across our country.

That's their ultimate goal — and they are not shy about it.

That's one of many reasons we must elect more pro-choice senators and members of Congress in November. It's also another reason why we need to elect at least two more Democrats to the Senate so we can end the super-majority filibuster rule and pass a national law protecting reproductive rights for every American.

As my friend John Lewis, whose memory we are honoring today, would say: “nothing can stop the power of a committed and determined people to make a difference”!
