Dear Ward 8 Residents,

The DC Council approved a measure allowing residents to self-certify for a medical cannabis license. On July 6, 2022, Mayor Muriel Bowser signed this measure, the Medical Marijuana Self-Certification Emergency Amendment Act of 2022, into law.

This law will allow DC residents, at least 21 years of age, to self-certify on their patient application that they will use cannabis purchased from a licensed dispensary for medical purposes. This self-certifications will be in lieu of securing a recommendation from their healthcare provider.

Residents who want to self-certify can do so at the Alcoholic Beverage Regulation Administration office or fill out an application through the online portal.

I look forward to working with the District government to create protections for residents who use marijuana. For example, I introduced the Prohibition of Marijuana Testing Act of 2021 (now known as "Cannabis Employment Protections Amendment Act of 2022"). If passed, it would prohibit employers from firing, failing to hire, or taking other personnel actions against an individual who participates in the District's or another state's medical cannabis program.

As we work to expand the laws around the District's cannabis industry, I encourage all residents needing a medical card to take advantage of this free program. Registrations are free through August 18, 2022. Registrations issued by September 30, 2022, are valid for two (2) years from the date of issuance. Monkeypox Vaccine Available in DC

Monkeypox is a rare but potentially severe viral illness transmitted from person to person through direct contact with bodily fluid or lesions. DCPS Summer Food Service

DC Public Schools is providing free breakfast and lunch to all children and youth 18 and younger throughout the summer. DC Minimum Wage Increase to $16.10

DC increased the minimum wage from $15.20 to $16.10 per hour, higher than any state in the country. While there is still more work to do, this is a win for DC workers. The tipped minimum wage also increased to $5.35 per hour.
