PROGRAM UPDATES:
Volviendo A Casa:
(New Program: "Returning Home")

David Maldonado Torres attempted to cross the border in June 2020 and went missing for almost a year. They found his remains in January 2021. CBP posted the missing migrant body remains found in the Otay Mountain desert in Dulzura, CA; they also found his driver’s license. David’s family was able to collect DNA and complete the tests to confirm the match.

Through our Volviendo a Casa program, we were able to help transport his ashes back to Michoacan, so that he could be reunited with his family. May he Rest In Peace.

We are devastated at the loss of another life; we continue to denounce the many policies at work at our southern border, which are the cause of this and continue to provide humanitarian aid to those crossing in hopes of preventing such tragedies.

Shelter Aid:

Tijuana's Assabil shelter, the first Muslim shelter in Mexico, celebrated Eid Al-Adha, a ceremony of prayer and painless sacrifice of a ram to bring meat to people in need. When the people from Assabil shelter learned that the Iglesia Caballeros de Jesús shelter has 1,500 migrants and needed help, they were the first to be brought meat.

A beautiful display of solidarity from one migrant shelter to another. We are honored to support Assabil shelter.

California Dignity for Families Fund
As part of a public-private partnership with Gov. Gavin Newsom, the California Dignity for Families Fund has recommended investments totaling over $8.3 million since its inception in May 2021.
The selection of this final round of investments prioritized resourcing and strengthening migrant communities often excluded from grant-making priorities, such as Black, Indigenous, Muslim, Latinx, LGBTQIA+, womxn, youth, people with disability and undocumented people serving organizations; Field led and informed datapoints; Deepening support along the continuum of care (ie. transational, transitional, transformational); Balancing state and local government strategies; and Supporting broader network and or ecosystem, planning and strategizing.

These investments support a holistic care infrastructure and capacity building in California, particularly at the border region.

We’re grateful to the community, movement leaders, Gov. Gavin Newsom, and philanthropic partners who continue to center dignity for all families in California.

Supreme Court Sides With Biden on Ending 'Remain in Mexico' Asylum Policy
President Joe Biden suspended the program on his first day in office in January 2021. But lower courts ordered it reinstated in response to a lawsuit from Republican-led Texas and Missouri. The current administration has sent far fewer people back to Mexico than did the Trump administration.

The heart of the legal fight was whether immigration authorities, with far less detention capacity than needed, had to send people to Mexico or whether they had the discretion under federal law to release asylum-seekers into the United States while they awaited their hearings.

The Supreme Court ruling comes days after at least 53 migrants — including women and children — died of intense heat inside a trailer truck while being smuggled into Texas, as desperation mounts among asylum-seekers to cross.

The Border Angels organization supports 17 migrant shelters in Tijuana and provides legal aid to residents.

Biden can end ‘Remain in Mexico,’ SCOTUS says. What that means for asylum-seekers across the border
Thousands of asylum-seekers have been forced to plead their cases in Mexico due to an immigration policy commonly known as “Remain in Mexico.” Aid groups have documented thousands of human rights abuses against those in the program, despite a pledge from the U.S. to help ensure access to “safe and secure shelters.”

Immigration aid and humanitarian groups have lambasted MPP for forcing asylum-seekers from mostly Central and South American countries to wait in Mexican border cities while their cases are pending in U.S. courts.

The Trump-era policy changed that by ordering non-Mexican nationals to wait in Mexican cities just south of the U.S. border, and enter the U.S. only for hearings before an immigration judge.
More than 12,000 people were enrolled into the program in San Diego under the Trump administration.
