Earlier this year, we exposed horrific experiments ([link removed]) that had been conducted by North Carolina State University researchers into ventilation shutdown (VSD) and ventilation shutdown plus (VSD+). The chickens subjected to these experiments were documented writhing, gasping, panting, staggering, and even throwing themselves against the walls of their confinement in a desperate attempt to escape.

VSD is an extremely cruel method of mass-killing farmed animals whereby barns are sealed and the airflow is cut off. This method has been used to kill up to tens of thousands of animals who die a slow death due to heat stress or suffocation. As if VSD performed on its own isn’t barbaric enough, VSD+ also includes adding heat or carbon dioxide into the process.

Animals are not just being subjected to VSD and VSD+ in laboratories. Most recently, the virulent bird flu epidemic ([link removed]) resulted in an estimated 28 million egg-laying hens, poultry chickens, and turkeys being “depopulated” or killed using methods such as VSD and VSD+.

There is no doubt that animals suffer when VSD or VSD+ is inflicted on them. Your help is needed to prevent this from happening to more animals in the future. Later this month, the American Veterinary Medical Association (AMVA) is holding their annual convention and Animal Outlook, along with other animal protection groups, is urging them to classify VSD and VSD+ as “Not Recommended”.

Dear Dr. Arce, Dr. Donlin and Dr. Johnson,

As someone who cares deeply about the welfare of animals, I’m deeply concerned about the use of ventilation shutdown (VSD) and ventilation shutdown plus (VSD+).

I recently viewed footage of VSD/VSD+ experiments performed on chickens by North Carolina State University and was appalled by the suffering these animals endured. They were filmed writhing, gasping, panting, staggering, and even throwing themselves against the walls of their confinement in a desperate attempt to escape.

This kind of suffering is inexcusable and I strongly urge the American Veterinary Medical Association (AMVA) to classify both VSD and VSD+ as “Not Recommended”.
