Turns Out Supporting Insurrectionists Isn’t Great for Business

Since the attack on the U.S. Capitol on January 6th, 2021, the 147 members who voted to overturn the results of the 2020 election have altogether received over $30 million in corporate campaign contributions. Who’s footing the bill? Brands you use everyday – including UPS, Cigna, Ford, AT&T, Home Depot, Toyota, American Airlines, Chevron, and Anheuser-Busch.

We tested attitudes around these nine corporations, who have each donated at least $50,000 directly to the reelection campaigns or leadership PACs of election deniers. Our polling found that their net favorability ratings drop, on average, by 40 percent once voters are informed of their campaign contributions to members of Congress who voted against certifying the presidential election results.

Additionally, 57% of voters oppose corporations making campaign contributions to members of Congress who voted to overturn the election, including 80 percent of Democrats and 56 percent of Independents.

The poll also tested if this information would influence voters' decisions as consumers – a majority of voters say they would be less likely to buy from a corporation that donated to members of Congress who voted to overturn the presidential election results. It’s clear these corporations don’t care about having a functioning democracy, but maybe they’ll at least care about their bottom line.

Here are some other highlights from DFP this week:

Liz Says “Stop Paying To Pay”

America’s grandma and favorite Senator with a plan for that, Elizabeth Warren, joined DFP’s blog this week! “A new poll from Data for Progress finds that a majority of voters support my Tax Filing Simplification Act by a +62-point margin. This critical piece of legislation would simplify the federal income tax filing process by allowing millions of Americans to receive a tax return already prepared by the IRS. Simplified filing would allow most Americans to complete their taxes in less than 10 minutes and at no cost,” says G-ma Liz.

Fossil Free Research Now!

Fossil fuel companies have been quietly leveraging their wealth to manipulate climate research ([link removed]) . Many of the nation’s most prominent universities, including Harvard ([link removed]) , MIT ([link removed]) , Yale, Princeton ([link removed]) , and George Washington ([link removed]) , have been colonized by the fossil fuel industry, and scientists are ringing the alarm about the effects this money has on climate research.

Recent polling ([link removed]) shows that when presented with the statement “Colleges and universities studying the impacts of climate change and sustainability should refuse donations from fossil fuel companies so they can remain unbiased in their research,” 57 percent of voters agree and only 29 percent of voters disagree. Those who agree include 68 percent of Democrats, 58 percent of Independents, and 47 percent of Republicans.

As Congress has become increasingly unable to pass substantial climate legislation, it is incumbent on students, faculty, and staff to demand their academic institutions reject fossil fuel funding and on those with institutional power to heed their — and the public’s — call to action. This is the new phase of the climate movement. Read the full blog here ([link removed]) .

Give Veterans Healthcare.

The Senate passed the Honoring Our PACT Act, a bipartisan bill that would deliver earned healthcare to veterans exposed to toxic burn pits and other toxic chemicals while serving overseas.

New polling ([link removed]) finds that 93 percent of voters believe that it is “very” or “somewhat important” for the U.S. government to provide healthcare to veterans who were exposed to toxins while serving overseas. This includes 93 percent of both Democrats and Republicans and 92 percent of Independents, demonstrating remarkable bipartisan agreement.

Dems Deliver

Joe Manchin is a weight on our fragile democracy and every waking moment that he calls himself a Democrat threatens the Space-Time continuum. He’s a 10 but he didn’t vote for Build Back Better? He’s a -11.

Still, the Infrastructure and Jobs Act is great and Joe Manchin did technically vote for it, so that’s nice. We’re aware that the bar is in the ground, besties.

Some of that funding from the Infrastructure bill will be used to provide reliable water and sewer services (we can’t possibly be 10s without reliable water and sewer service). Joe Manchin clearly loves the bill because it’s doing a lot for West Virginia: specifically, providing $5 million for water and wastewater infrastructure. That’s hot.

In West Virginia alone, $1,500,000 will go to Williamson for upgrading the water treatment, storage and distribution system. In Fort Gray, another $1,325,000 will be used for the rehabilitation of existing wastewater stations and the installation of a 95,000 gallon per day wastewater treatment plant to provide reliable sewer service to approximately 300 residential customers. $1,100,000 will be used to upgrade the Glen Morgan Wastewater Treatment Plant in Raleigh County and $1,075,000 will be for a waterline extension to approximately 50 unserved residents of the Grassy Creek Road area. You can learn more about the projects here ([link removed]) .

Even though we’re definitely not presidents of the Joe Manchin Fan Club, we’re excited that the people of West Virginia will be getting upgrades to their water and wastewater systems. Again, it’s the bare minimum: but it is Democrats delivering for the shit that matters (lol).
