John,
Democrats have one more shot before the election to pass a bill through budget reconciliation, a process that prevents Senate Republicans from their usual obstruction. But it takes every Democrat to agree, and last night Senator Joe Manchin ruled out action on climate or reversing the Trump tax giveaway. What remains is lowering prescription drug prices and stopping a spike in health insurance premiums.
When a single vain Senator can casually cross out the promises Democrats campaigned and won on in 2018 and 2020, it’s tempting to get discouraged. As bad as this feels, if Republicans take control of Congress, it gets a whole lot worse. This is the very least that we could expect from this session of Congress―so instead of giving up, let’s secure the wins we have, and fight like hell for real champions to make Joe Manchin obsolete.
Social Security Works is spending the 4 months between now and the election with two goals: Pass the health care measures, and then elect a Congress that can act without Joe Manchin’s permission. Become a Social Security Works member today to help us win!
Here’s the plan: Democrats promised voters that they would lower prescription drug prices in 2020―particularly by allowing Medicare to negotiate lower prices with drug corporations, the same way that the Department of Veterans Affairs does. We must keep at least this promise to them.
Then, we need to hold the House of Representatives and elect at least two more Democratic Senators. With extremist Republicans running on a platform of eliminating Social Security, overturning elections, and a national abortion ban, this is no ordinary midterm.
