Big news, John:
Our lawsuit against the state of Texas just cleared a major hurdle. Last September we filed suit against the state of Texas over the voter suppression law SB1. Texas Republicans asked the judge to dismiss the lawsuit, but their motion was just rejected! This is a huge hurdle that’s just been overcome, and it means the suit can now move forward.
SB 1 is an arduous law designed to limit Tejanos’ ability to exercise their full citizenship. Not only are we filing suit to protect the right to vote for all people of color, and the 250,000 young Latino Tejanos who will reach voting age in 2022, but to protect every Texan’s right to vote. A thriving, healthy democracy demands maximum participation by all eligible voters. It’s time lawmakers stop the assault on voting rights and instead compete for our votes with ideas.
This isn’t the first time we’ve sued Texas. In fact, it’s the fourth in recent years. The team at Voto Latino is committed to holding accountable anyone who would seek to suppress the vote, and this is just one part of those efforts.
It’s going to take a lot of work to stop voter suppression, defend the Democratic majorities in Congress, and make sure our communities continue to have a seat at the table in government. And with the GOP getting more and more extreme, we can’t afford to leave anything on the table.
Luckily, we’ve been fighting (and winning) these battles for years. But our work takes resources, and we’re counting on grassroots supporters like you to fuel our efforts every step of the way.
So if you can, John, please make a donation of any amount right now to help us keep up our work ahead of the midterms:
