Centre for Mental Health news
** July 2022
------------------------------------------------------------
Hello from Sarah!
Dear friends,
This month we've published an exciting
new report ([link removed]) on how giving young people more flexible and holistic support can make a huge difference to their mental health. We’re calling on all mental health services to offer young people more choices
about the support they get and how they want to access it. No one size fits all.
July 2022 marks twenty years since we published Breaking the circles of fear ([link removed]) , a ground-breaking report on the experiences of Black people within mental health services. We held an event to reflect on where we're at two decades on, and how far we have yet to go to eradicate racism from mental health. Watch the event back in full ([link removed]) . For more on this, read reflections from Doreen Joseph ([link removed]) and Abdi Hassan ([link removed]) .
Tom Pollard joined us on the
podcast ([link removed]) this month to discuss the impact of poverty on mental health and the urgent need to boost social security to protect people's wellbeing - an even more vital call in the midst of the cost of living crisis.
Take care during this heatwave,
Sarah

Evaluating a young people's enhanced mental health service at Centre 33
Centre 33’s Someone To Talk To Initiative set out to better meet the needs of young people facing multiple barriers, challenges or inequalities by offering more flexible and longer-term support without bureaucratic barriers on eligibility. It finds that the young people saw significant improvements to their mental health, dismantling the myth that some young people are 'hard to reach'.

Breaking the circles of fear: 20 years on ([link removed])
[link removed]
July 2022 marks twenty years since our report Breaking the circles of fear ([link removed]) was published, exploring the relationships between mental health services and Black communities in the UK.
We know that systemic and structural racism still put Black people at risk of a disproportionate use of coercion and poorer outcomes from mental health services.
Professor Frank Keating (one of the authors), Dr Jacqui Dyer (NHS England’s Mental Health Equalities Adviser) and Chika Akas (a Co-producer from our Young Changemakers programme) share their reflections, 20 years on.

Podcast: Tom Pollard - 'Poverty, benefits and mental health' ([link removed])
[link removed]
Thea speaks to independent policy expert Tom Pollard about the fundamental issue of poverty, mental health and the benefits system. They discuss his recent research on how using food banks impacts people's mental health, why he decided to retrain as a mental health social worker, and what is needed to truly address the vicious cycle of poverty and poor mental health.
