The Maxwell decision, 7 yips for talking with youth, Love146 on PBS NewsHour, Tread on Trafficking, and more – all right here in your monthly recap.

THIS MONTH AT

Recently, Ghislaine Maxwell was sentenced to 20 years and R. Kelly was sentenced to 30 years – both for their crimes related to child sex trafficking. We see too many cases that never make it as far as Kelly’s and Maxwell’s did. "Justice" isn’t elusive just because it doesn’t happen enough — but also because it never feels like enough. When we consider the impact on victims’ lives, 20 or 30 years in jail doesn’t FEEL like “justice.” Nothing seems like enough when we know the harm caused can ripple for a lifetime – and sometimes farther.

Congratulations, Treaders! 2 weeks ago, we wrapped up our 30-day-challenge with over $60K raised to end child trafficking! We are so grateful to every person who walked, danced, drank water, and made so many healthy choices, all in the name of ending child exploitation. It's not too late to Tread to make a difference! Tread on Trafficking is a year-round campaign, and there are folks kicking off their efforts all the time.

Would your youth feel comfortable coming to you if something happened to them? Here's one tip: Don’t make promises you can’t keep. No one can promise that a youth will never again experience hurt or violence. Making these promises might help you feel better but they can set up unrealistic expectations for the youth that can cause harm later on.

Love146 UK's Daniel Sohege spoke to PBS NewsHour about why the refugee crisis affects the human trafficking crisis. Recent UK resettlement legislation says that migrants who arrive illegally on British shores would be flown to Rwanda, displacing many migrants. Sohege shared, "Ever since the Brexit referendum, this has been a major, key point for the government. And they have just gradually increased the hostility of immigration policies."

Recently four-time Olympian runner Mo Farah shared that he experienced child labor trafficking. He was lied to, brought by a trafficker into the UK from Djibouti at a young age, and exploited as a domestic worker for years, unable to even attend school. He was kept by a family in the UK, being forced to do housework and child care in exchange for basic needs. Too often young people, like Farah, are afraid to come forward about being trafficked. Love146 UK Director of Services spoke with the London Evening Standard about Farah's story, and the children we work with in the UK.

Summer is a time when some youth are more hungry, lonely, lacking stability, bored, and vulnerable. Empty, unstructured days can be hard for many of us – but that’s especially true for teens processing trauma. When you donate this season, it helps Love146 continue to show up for youth in our Survivor Care. Here is an article ([link removed]) about 5 ways your donation right now would make a huge difference for a child.
