Yesterday Alexandria was walking up the steps of the Capitol when a man made inappropriate sexist and racist comments to her right in front of Capitol police officers.1 The officers did nothing. They didn’t even ask the guy to take a step back.
Not only did this incident resurface serious concerns about why so little is done to protect the women of color who serve in the Capitol, but it also raises a larger question about why men too often just stand by when they see other men catcalling and accosting women.
So many men know or are friends with people like this man and just shrug off their behavior or ignore it because they don’t know what else to do in the moment.
But we know that this kind of behavior often escalates and tracks with domestic abuse, stalking, and assault.
So last night Alexandria went to Instagram and asked to hear from men: How have you grappled with this issue? Has another man’s behavior ever made you uncomfortable, and did you respond in the moment? If you didn’t know how to respond in the past, do you respond now?
