Dear Neighbor,
Like many of you, I am horrified by the epidemic of gun violence that our country faces.
This is not normal. Americans should not have to worry about the threat of a mass shooting every time we step outside.
As your Congresswoman, I am taking action to end the gun violence crisis in America.
I was proud to champion the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act—the first major gun violence prevention legislation in over two decades to become law.
The Bipartisan Safer Communities Act enhances background checks for buyers under age 21, gives states more funding to keep guns out of the hands of dangerous individuals, expands access to mental health services for children and families, and cracks down on straw purchasing and illegal gun trafficking. These are important steps that will help us achieve a broader goal: putting an end to the gun violence crisis in America.
But we need to keep up this momentum.
While I am heartened by the progress made, more must be done to keep our schools and communities safe.
We need universal background checks. We need to raise the minimum age to purchase a firearm to 21. We need an assault weapons ban.
I know our work is not over.
Sincerely,
Linda T. Sánchez Member of Congress
