Last week, a young man fired 70 rounds of ammunition into a crowd of people in Highland Park, IL, killing 7 people and injuring over 30 more. This shooting came on a day that was meant to celebrate freedom, but became a harsh reminder that none of us are free from gun violence in this country.
This shooting was made more deadly because of the weapon that was used – an assault rifle manufactured by Smith & Wesson – the same gun that was used to kill my daughter, Jaime, and 16 of her peers and teachers in Parkland, FL. He fired 150 rounds of ammunition.
These are not the only mass shootings in which these deadly weapons have been used, either, and this most recent tragedy in Illinois underscores the importance of holding gun manufacturers accountable for their role in this epidemic.
Brady has been fighting to do just that: Last September, Brady filed a complaint with the FTC to investigate Smith & Wesson who, highlighting its marketing tactics that make their assault rifles attractive to young men enamored with military fantasies – like the 22-year-old shooter in Highland Park and the 19-year-old shooter in Parkland.
Gun manufacturers will always choose profits over people, despite knowing that assault weapons are the weapon of choice for mass killers and that their assault weapons have been used in multiple horrific mass shootings. It’s far past time we hold gun manufacturers accountable for their roles in senseless gun violence across the country – so Brady is fighting back and they need your support.
I need your help to keep the pressure on malicious gun manufacturers who are willfully marketing dangerous weapons of war to the public. Please, John, will you add your name to our petition to hold Smith & Wesson accountable for their dangerous marketing tactics and help prevent future mass shootings by signing our petition now? I work with Brady because our goal is the same: Stop this senseless killing.
No one should have to experience the pain that my family and I did, and still do, after losing Jaime to gun violence. So each day, I continue to fight to stop mass shootings and gun violence in any way I can, and holding gun manufacturers will do just that.
Military-style assault rifles should never be marketed to civilians – especially not young people and potential mass shooters. Will you join me and honor Jaime and the countless other victims of mass shooters armed with assault weapons? Add your name now to our petition to hold Smith & Wesson accountable and prevent mass shootings. >> [[link removed]]
