“Big protest in D.C. on January 6th. Be there, will be wild!”

Donald Trump knew exactly what he was doing when he fired off that tweet on December 19th, 2021. He knew it, his staff knew it, and his supporters took it as a call to arms.

Trump’s flirtation with extremism was a centerpiece of his administration, including telling the white supremacist group the Proud Boys during the 2020 debates to “stand back, and standby.” He knew his followers hung on his every word: every speech analyzed, every tweet inspected.

So when he tweeted about election fraud, teasing a “wild” protest, the most recent January 6th Committee hearing showed, without a doubt, that extremists around the country were ready. And they still are.

We are still seeing the impact of the damage Trump caused that day. Extreme MAGA Republican candidates across the country are peddling the dangerous fiction that the 2020 election was stolen—and they’re winning their primaries. Trump’s inner circle knew that if all else failed, his strategy to remain in power was to summon thousands of violent rioters to Washington to stop the typically peaceful transfer of power with the lie that the election was fraudulent.

Through chilling testimony and hard evidence, the January 6th committee is making the case crystal clear. We heard former White House Counsel Pat Cipollone testify that he told Trump repeatedly there was no evidence of election fraud and federal seizure of voting machines was “a terrible idea for the country”. We saw a text from Brad Parscale, Trump’s former campaign manager: Trump’s words got people killed.

This lie has metastasized beyond Trump and his inner circle. At this very moment, there are more than 650 Republican state legislators who were involved in attempting to overthrow the election. Right now, over 100 Republican primary winners support Trump’s lies about a stolen 2020 election.

What’s even scarier? These same politicians are working today to sabotage future elections they lose and take away not only our freedom to vote but to choose our own leaders.

We’re not going to let these enemies of democracy win. We have a plan to strengthen our democracy and mobilize voters across the country.
