Big and bold: Chitin, the fibrous substance found in the exoskeletons of insects, can do almost anything. The hard, but flexible material, strengthens insect jaws, supports their respiratory systems, and covers their scales. To the naked eye, this green immigrant leaf weevil (Polydrusus formosus) appears to have a green cuticle. It's the dense, chitinous scales, however, that give it color, this extraordinary photo collection shows us.
